  • Organic Color Can Boom Hair Salon Businesses

Many salons make additional income from their hair products. Selling a few extra bottles of shampoo, conditioner and other hair products can really boost your weekly income. But few salon owners consider the impact that switching to better hair products could have on their business.

As a hairstylist, you probably started out with not much clientèle and gradually worked your way up to a few regular customers. By doing an excellent job and getting an outstanding product with the client's hair, word of mouth spread and eventually you have a booming business.

Because hairstyling is all about looks and appearance, the appearance of your final result directly affects your income. And the products you use can make the difference between hair that looks beautiful and lustrous and hair that appears, well, lackluster.

High levels of ammonia in your hair coloring products, harsh chemicals in perms, sprays and styling solutions, and corrosive detergents in shampoo all damage the client's hair to some degree. Since hair is the canvas on which you do your art as a hairstylist, keeping the client's hair in good condition is good for your business.

Products like Organic Color Systems that do not contain ammonia eliminate this damage to your client's hair. Hair holds on to color better with less fading and the hair doesn't become dry and brittle. Salon owners who switched to Organic Color Systems experienced a great improvement in their business as a result—one salon owner started to get 1-2 referrals per day just on the basis of the exceptional results she got with Organic Color Systems.

Susan Alascia, of Spring Hill, Florida, says “I opened my business, just myself one year ago. I now have three other stylists that joined me that wanted to work in a more healthy environment. They, like myself, are concerned about their health and the health of their clients. My business is continuing to grow even in this difficult economy. I am very grateful to those who had the insight to leave this harmful toxin out of the color. This is by far the best color line I have worked with.”

Joe Carling, of Mode Organic Salon in Seattle, also had excellent results from switching to Organic Color Systems. “Every staff member right up to support staff loves the color and our clientèle has grown by leaps and bounds because of this color line. The referrals that we have received have helped our business to grow so that we opened a second location and have plans for a third in 2009. I have been to other salons throughout the west coast and encourage them to try this color line... because it works better than anything else.”

A better product means better business and Organic Color Systems is precisely that better product.

  • Finding The Right Hair Color For You

There are many factors involved with choosing the right hair color for you. You want a color that complements your skin tone and enhances what nature gave you, but with so many choices out there, how do you know what is the right hair color for you?

According to Julyne Derrick in Everything You Need to Know About Hair Color, it's all about matching your skin tone. You may have heard references to “warm” and “cool” skin tones without knowing what that means, but it's actually pretty easy to figure out.

“Cool” usually refers to fair-skinned, blue-eyed people. These are the people who sunburn before they tan. People who have olive, golden or dark skin and brown or dark eyes fall into the “warm” category. These people tan easily. Still not sure? A good trick is to check the veins in your wrists. If they run green, you're likely in the warm category; if they run blue, you're probably a cool.

Warm-skinned people look best in golden shades like bronze and caramel. Going a shade darker than your skin will enhance your natural beauty, and a few highlights in a warm golden color can add depth and gleam to your hair. But beware going too light—a full-on blond color may look unnatural and wash you out. Also avoid strawberry shades, which look unnatural next to dark skin.

Remember that darker hair complements brown or green eyes better than blond, so if you're a warm, you're safer in that family of colors. And if you're not sure if blond will work on you, here's a good rule to follow: if you had blond hair as a child, you most likely have the right skin tone to go blond now.

If you are a cool, go for cool shades like ash blond or a cool brown. Bright blond looks great with this skin tone and complements blue or light green eyes. If you don't want to go all the way blond, try a few face-framing highlights in a light blond to enhance your natural colors. Cool or pink skin tones can also wear red hair better than anyone else.

Of course, there are many different possible options in all categories of hair color. You can consult with your hairstylist, too. But buying a box from the grocery store is a big no-no when changing your color: one small mistake could cost you hundreds of dollars in repair. And hair doesn't hold up well to repeat coloring and fixing—it gets damaged a little more each time.

Your best bet in hair coloring is to find a salon that uses an ammonia-free hair color like Organic Color Systems, which will not damage your hair the way regular hair color does. Even one coloring does some damage to the hair's shine and texture, which can be avoided by using an ammonia-free product. The better condition your hair is in, the better your color will look and the longer it will last. And, let's face it—improving on nature is what hair coloring is all about.

  • Is Your Tap Water Ruining Your Hair?

Hair coloring can have a lot of negative effects on the hair. But what most women may not know is that the water in your shower can make these negative effects even worse. Most states use chlorine to kill any bacteria in their tap water, frequently using very high levels. Chlorine dries hair and makes it more brittle, but for those with already chemically treated hair the effects are even worse. Hilton Bell, of Organic Salon Systems, advocates professional hairstylists using a shower filter to protect your hair from the drying effects of chlorine in the tap water. If using a filter in the salon (where you get your hair washed once a month) is important, imagine how much more important it could be in your home, where you wash your hair daily.

Your hair is made up of two layers. The outer layer, called the cuticle, covers and protects the inner layer, called the cortex. The cuticle looks like a series of small scales under a microscope. It has a natural lubricant called sebum that protects the cuticle. Chlorine sucks the sebum out of the cuticle, decreasing your hair's shine. It can also cause the cuticle to break. The cuticle doesn't perform its function of protecting the cortex and the cortex can split. This is the cause of split ends.

According to Dr. Marcy Street, a dermatologist who also founded Doctor's Approach Dermatology and Laser center, chlorine pulls the moisture out of your hair. Because hair is not living tissue, once it gets dried out and becomes dry and brittle, it can't be restored to its original condition and has to be grown out. The problem for color-treated, permed or other chemically treated hair is that the hair has already been weakened by chemical treatments. Ammonia lifts up the cuticle to allow chemicals to penetrate the cortex, and thioglycolates break down the bonds in the cortex that give the hair its shape. When color treated or permed hair is exposed to chlorine it can become frizzy and lifeless.

Columbia University's Health Q& A Internet Service advises swimmers to “Go light on hair coloring, perming, waves, hot curlers/combs, and blow dryers” because of the high levels of chlorine in pools. What many people don't know is that local tap water can contain just as much chlorine as a swimming pool. According to Hilton Bell, the water in Clearwater, FL has a pH of above 8, which is about the same as a swimming pool. The same can be found over a majority of the U.S. This means that depending on where you live, you could be washing your hair in what is essentially pool water. If you color or perm your hair, you may want to look into buying a filter for your shower head to extend the life, luster and resilience of your hair.

  • When The Going Gets Tough; The Tough Get Going!

How to Flourish and Prosper in Tough Economic Times
    By Hilton Bell

We all find ourselves in a tougher economic climate these days, thanks to the mis-management of politicians and greedy bankers on Wall Street. While individually we can’t do anything to change the global economic crisis that has beset a large part of the world, we can do something within our own sphere of influence.

Having been in the beauty business for over 40 years, I have been through a few recessions and tough economic times. Fortunately, there is still money around despite the above mentioned problems.

“Money is an idea backed by confidence.” While the politicians have, along with the mad dog media, knocked the heck out of the confidence of people, when it comes to money, it’s still being printed and available.

So the key to making sure your business and income stays in survival mode has a number of components to it.

Let’s start with a few facts:

“Money flows to things that stand out in the marketplace”
The level of quality and the value you give for your goods and services determines your client retention.

How do you stand out in the marketplace and rise above the noise of the crowd?

I would recommend sitting down and looking at ways you might be able to do that with your salon.

One of the ways is promoting that you use ORGANIC COLOR SYSTEMS, an Ammonia Free Color Range.
Going Green and Organic is a definite way to stand out.

Giving Clients a more pleasant experience when they have their hair colored, than the salon down the road, definitely makes you stand out.

Giving your Clients hair better shine and condition is another way.

Making sure your Clients get great advice on looking after their hair at home is important.

Having clients enter your salon without being hit with the chemical smell of Ammonia is something that people will notice and enjoy.
Along with a number of other things that will have your clients say “Wow I don’t get that down the road at the other place” i.e., your enthusiasm for what you do, the integrity of you and your staff, the competence in your craft, etc.

How you REALLY make your salon stand out is up to you, of course. The important thing is you actually do things to accomplish this.

Whether times are tough or not this is relevant and important, but it becomes more so when money gets a bit tighter.

I’m pleased to say at Organic Salon Systems we have the products that definitely give you a number of points to stand out from the crowd.

We KNOW from experience and feedback from our clients, when you use and effectively market the fact that you use our products, you WILL create interest in the marketplace and you WILL rise above the noise of other salons.

Not only will you attract new clients but your client retention should go up also.

Client retention of course is based on you doing great work along with making sure each and every client is treated like a VIP.

Giving that bit extra right across the spectrum of your client’s experience while in your salon, will cement those clients to you as loyal clients.

To help you as much as we can, we will continue to provide you with the best revolutionary products. We have some exciting new products coming out early next year. We will keep you posted as this develops.

Within the next 10 days or so we also have a series of postcards you can use for your salon along with ideas for press releases. You can send these formatted cards to your printer and they can put your salon details in it to create an individualized look. When this is made available, we will be sure to let you know. We will have the ability to email them or send them in your order package. These will be available to all our clients free of charge.

    Flourish and prosper,
    Hilton Bell

P.S. It also helps not to watch, read or listen to most of the mainstream media; they are merchants of doom and gloom.

You will feel much brighter and way more positive and let’s face it, that’s something your clients will notice and appreciate also.

About Me

  • International Hair & Beauty Systems was founded by Hilton Bell and his wife, Lee Ann. Hilton has worked on the creative teams of Wella, Schwartzkopf and L'Oreal as well as operating his own high-fashion salons and teaching seminars on several different continents. Hilton had been searching for a hair color system that produced results whilst conserving the structural integrity of the hair. Eventually he discovered Organic Color Systems, a UK based company that was producing long lasting ammonia free colors, as well as a range of hair care products that support a more natural approach to treating the hair. International Hair & Beauty Systems is now the exclusive importer of Organic Color Systems' products in America. While many products have advertised low ammonia formulations there has never been a credible hair color solution that bypasses the use of ammonia entirely until now. Organic Color Systems guarantees long lasting ammonia free colors.
